7 Things to Do After a RelapseDealing with an addiction is an experience that can make you or break you. Getting clean might as well be one of the hardest things you will go through in life. Through drug addiction treatment programs you might find a solution for your situation. This, however, does not mean your problems will magically go away. With drug addiction treatment you will be able to find the support you need to get your act together and finally get clean. Don’t forget – you will need to figure out what got you into that situation and you will need to work hard.                                             

What to do after relapse

If you have given yourself the opportunity to join a rehab program and you have managed to get through it, getting yourself clean and healthier than before in the process, you should be looking at options to help you stay clean even after the program. However, if you have already relapsed, here are seven things you should consider doing:

  1. Give things some thought. Why did you join a rehab program in the first place? Think about those motivations and ask yourself,”Is this what I worked so hard for?
  2. Take notice of how valuable a rehab program is. Your rehab program was probably expensive, but it’s not just about the money. Consider how hard a time you had getting yourself clean. Think about how many times you’re willing to go through that. Staying clean is hard, and it will always be hard, but it is easier than falling into a vicious cycle that you can’t get out of.
  3. Take responsibility for what you’ve done.
  4. Don’t beat yourself up.
  5. Get help. There’s no time to lose. You should be looking for someone who can help you, whether it’s a rehab center (even the one you already signed up for) or a team of professionals who can help you. Make sure they offer aftercare options that will help you stay clean this time around.
  6. Set new goals and create a new plan. If your past motivations weren’t strong enough, you will need to find new ones. Setting small goals that can be accomplished in short amounts of time is also very helpful when dealing with this kind of situation. Make sure you are being realistic about what you decide so that you can actually accomplish these things.
  7. Work on your relationships. There are a lot of addiction cases where the main reason for people to start doing drugs has something to do with one or more relationships they have. Whether you are thinking about family or friends or anyone else who cares about you, their support is important and if you want to receive this support, you should also be offering them something. Work on those relationships, let them know what you’re doing and ask for their help through this complicated process. This will diminish your chances of getting back into drugs.
  8. Learn. Take what you can from this relapse experience, work on your awareness of what has happened and write, think or do what it takes for things to seep in so that you will avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Your health is one of the most valuable things you possess, and as such, you should be taking good care of it. Make the decision to be OK once more and stick by it, no matter what happens. This will allow you not only to have a healthier body but also to feel better about yourself and to improve or even recover relationships with people you care about.
